Voting to screw the opposition rather then support

Hi,

I guess I'm a little naive(or maybe too optimistic yet) in this regard. Over the last year or so I've heard of a tactic that gets used where by you vote for a weaker candidate in the opposing party rather then vote for the person you support.
While from a purely tactical stand point I consider this a sound strategy, personally I consider it an affront to the spirit of our political system and a sign of how far we have fallen.
So, what do you think, is this just part of "the game" or is it a perverse twisting of how a democratic system should work?

Please help.
